NATIVE STUDIES PILOT PROJECT

4. COURSE OUTLINE

The KIHS Pilot Project will use Native Studies as a backdrop to provide students with experience in using computers effectively.

There will be a series of 16-20 lessons. Each "lesson" will take place over one week. Students will require one hour (60 minutes) at some point on a daily basis. Assuming that there are five school days in the week, they will then have five hours to complete one week's assignment(s).

  1. Introductions
    • the students; the guest teacher
    • the computer; K-Net conferencing; the Internet
    • course expectations
    • student contributions
    • use of the Internet
    • learning how to do searches on the Internet
    • increasing keyboarding skills

  2. Native History
    • current issues; past treaty relationships
    • importance of oral tradition and Elders
    • use of historical stories
    • research/community project

  3. Stories
    • An examination of the stories of Native peoples through story and art forms
    • introduction to various types of stories
    • gathering of local stories
    • making their own stories
    • searching the net for other communities' stories
    • exploration of internet art sites
    • doing some art work based upon what they see at the sites

  4. Career Exploration
    Using the internet for career exploration
    • exploring Aboriginal business ventures
    • personality inventory
    • exploring university sites
    • setting some goals
    • developing an understanding of leaders in their community
    • doing interviews with personalities in their community
    • creating a website of local personalities
