Connecting Pictou Island School to the Internet
March 30 and 31, 1999

Making sure all Canadian schools and their students have the opportunity to get connected to the Internet resulted in a special effort to get Pictou Island school on-line. Kim MacKinnon of Industry Canada’s First Nation Schoolnet Program and John Moreau of K-Net Services (a First Nations Helpdesk) made the trip to Pictou Island the last week of March with the equipment necessary to complete the Internet connection for the local school.
The equipment included an MSAT phone unit, the DirecPC dish and the computer system configured to work with both units. As it turned out, the existing telephone system proved to be more than adequate to handle data transmissions to the nearest Internet provider on the main land and the MSAT was returned to Ottawa. Arriving in Halifax, Kim and John rented a car to transport all the equipment (including the satellite dishes) to the dock in Caribou to take the boat over to Pictou Island ....

It is going to be a full load.
This was the earliest time in the season that the ice left so the local fishing boat could make this trip.
And here is Kim hanging onto her hat as they make the crossing to the island.
Now to get all this stuff from the dock to the school.
And mount the DirecPC dish outside the Pictou Island school / community centre.
