Connecting
Pictou Island School to the Internet

Making sure all
Canadian schools and their students have the opportunity to get connected
to the Internet resulted in a special effort to get Pictou Island school
on-line. Kim MacKinnon of Industry Canada’s First Nation Schoolnet Program
and John Moreau of K-Net Services (a First Nations Helpdesk) made the
trip to Pictou Island the last week of March with the equipment necessary
to complete the Internet connection for the local school.
The equipment included an MSAT phone unit, the DirecPC dish and the
computer system configured to work with both units. As it turned out,
the existing telephone system proved to be more than adequate to handle
data transmissions to the nearest Internet provider on the main land
and the MSAT was returned to Ottawa. Arriving in Halifax, Kim and John
rented a car to transport all the equipment (including the satellite
dishes) to the dock in Caribou to take the boat over to Pictou Island
....
