[4) Adding Text]

Let's start by creating a title and heading for your document. Click on Properties from the menu bar and then select Document... A dialog box should appear on your screen. Make sure the General tab is selected.
[Document Properties Dialog Box]
Click in the box marked "Title" and then type your name, followed by: "makes it to the Web!" Press the tab key on the keyboard and then enter your name in the box marked "Author." If you wish, you may press tab once more and write a brief description of the page you are about to create (this tutorial will take you through the steps to creating a simple personal home page).

Your next step is to place some text on your page (we'll add a fancy picture later). Let's start with a heading. In HTML, you can think of different paragraph styles much as you would in a word processor. For example, Heading 1 is a large font-size (most commonly used at the very beginning of a page). Heading 6 on the other hand, is very small (and often hard to read). To begin your page, click on Properties, Paragraph, and then Heading 1.

Now, all you have to do is type. Start off by typing "Welcome to my Home Page". DO NOT press return at the end of the line! Click on Insert on the menu bar and then Horizontal Line. This will add a line under the text you just typed. The cursor should now be positioned at the end of the horizontal line which was just inserted. Now you may press return. The paragraph style box (right above the page area) should now say "Normal" instead of "Heading 1." Now just type something about yourself. For example: If you would like to make any text bold or italicized, you may use the keyboard or the mouse. The commands are the same as the commands for most word processors. For example, to make a word or letter boldface, press ctrl-b (or press the bolded "A" button on the button-bar). Want italics? Press ctrl-i, or click on the italicized "A" on the button bar. For typewriter, or fixed-width typeface, press ctrl-t or press the fixed-width "A" on the button bar. Much like in word processors, you press the keys (or click the mouse) once to turn the option on, then once more to turn it back off.

Now, insert another horizonal line after the paragraph about yourself. Press return at the end of the horizontal line, and change the paragraph properties as we did for Heading 1, except this time, choose Address. The cursor should be positioned under second horizontal line that you inserted. Type "Created By:" and then put your name. After you type your name, press return and change the paragraph properties back to normal (you may use the white box at the botton of the button bars to change from heading styles to normal or address text, if you wish). Now type "Last Updated:" and put today's date (this should appear in the same typeface as the paragraph about yourself did).

If all went well, your page should look something like this:
